If US Forces Withdraw from Japan

Every Wednesday night, on the way to a cram school to which my daughter goes, I turn into 810AM in my car and listen to Rush Limbaugh. As usual, Limbaugh furiously criticizes policies of the Democrats and the Obama administration. One day when my daughter got in the car, I turned off the radio. "What were you listening to, Dad?" she asked. "Well, American politics," I replied.

Every Sunday evening, on the way to a baseball field where my son and his teammates play, I turn into 810AM again in the car, and listen to A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor. I enjoy songs and talks by Keillor and his cast. One day when my son got in the car, "What are these guys saying, Dad?" he asked. "They are talking about the nature of Texans. People living in State of Texas, you know," I replied.

You might imagine that those conversations were carried out in the United States of America. No. Not in the US actually. These talks with my children were in Japan!

810AM is American Forces Network (AFN) Tokyo which provides 24-hour radio services. AFN's nickname is "Eagle 810." Its principal audience is US military members, civilian employees, and their families. But, Japanese people are its audience, too.

An Opportunity to Participate in a Global Meeting
Ernest Smith was delighted when his boss, Suzuki, announced that the head office in Japan wanted Ernest to present his ideas at a global working group meeting in Tokyo. His persistence in promoting the new initiative was finally paying off! Suzuki said, "The meeting will take place on November 25th. We will travel together on the 23rd and return to the US on the 28th." "Wait a minute," Ernest said, "the meeting is going to be taking place right over Thanksgiving." "So," Suzuki said, "is that a problem?"

Yes, We Can (Steam)

Winters on Japan’s Pacific coast tend to be extremely dry, and to avoid respiratory discomforts many people utilize room humidifiers. This cleverly designed item from Green House resembles a can of beer, right down to the German slogan—"Für ein behagliches Heim" (for a comfortable home)—on the label. But actually it incorporates an ultrasonic oscillator that produces a fine spray of mist. Power is by USB cable connected to a personal computer. Water capacity is 140ml and as a safety measure, operation shuts off automatically after two hours. Price may vary according to the seller.
